Our History

Citizens National Bank was organized December 27, 1909 as a State Bank under the name Paintsville Bank & Trust Co.  The bank began operations in February  1910 with initial Capital of $50,000.00.

After 16 years of operation, on December 18, 1926, the bank became Second National Bank of Paintsville; as Paintsville already had a National Bank of Paintsville in existence at that time.

At a special stockholders meeting on June 30, 1959, the bank changed its name to Citizens National Bank and was approved by the OCC on July 15th, 1959. The bank’s capital was $100,000.

On November 19, 1982, Citizens National Corporation was incorporated as a holding company owning Citizens National Bank.

In the fall of 1997, Citizens National Corporation made its first acquisition by buying Bank Josephine, a state bank chartered on February 25, 1890.

During March 1999, Citizens established a “de novo” branch in Salyersville, opening with a mobile unit then constructing a new building in October 1999.

On May 25, 1999, Bank Josephine was merged into Citizens National Bank. With the merger of Bank Josephine and the new Salyersville branch, Citizens National added locations in Floyd and Magoffin counties to its Johnson County footprint.

On June 15, 2006 Citizens National Corporation purchased Heritage National Bank of Ashland with conversion completed June 24, 2006, adding Ashland, Russell and Grayson branches. Citizens National Bank’s growing footprint was now Johnson, Floyd, Magoffin, Boyd, Greenup and Carter Counties.

The following year, July 27, 2007, Citizens National Bank purchased Kentucky National Bank in Pikeville. The merger was completed on August 10, 2007 adding two additional branches and Pike County to Citizens National Bank’s service area.

Citizens ended December 31, 2014 with 8 counties by adding Lawrence County with the acquisition of Peoples Security Bank of Louisa. On January 8, 2016, Citizens National Bank completed the acquisition and merger of Alliance Banking Company located in Winchester, KY.

With the addition of Clark County, Citizens begins 2016 operating 13 branches in nine counties throughout Kentucky, with approximately $622 million in assets and $503 million in deposits.

In May 2016, Citizens decided to return to our roots and convert from a national charter to a state chartered member of the Federal Reserve and on June 30, 2016, the bank officially changed its name to Citizens Bank of Kentucky. The new name and updated logo were introduced to reflect the bank’s commitment to serve the banking needs for the citizens of Kentucky.

As of December 2020, Citizens Bank of Kentucky operates 12 branches in eight counties, which include Johnson, Floyd, Magoffin, Boyd, Carter, Pike, Lawrence and Clark counties.  Citizens Bank of Kentucky remains one of the largest independently owned and operated community banks in Kentucky.
